Building A Parkade At The Heart Of A Busy Campus
Our team ensured campus life could carry on as usual at Carleton University even as we constructed the 70,000 square-foot foundation for a parkade along a rail line running through the property. Strict safety measures were deployed to protect the high number of students and contractors on and around the site, including flagging and fencing for vehicle and pedestrian control. We also constructed access roads and ramps for the crane that was used to hoist pre-cast concrete, and roads and platforms for the piling work.
Solutions For Challenging Soil Conditions
As nearly half the site was inaccessible for geotechnical analysis before work began, we were not surprised to encounter challenging soil conditions. Groundwater levels were higher than anticipated, resulting in unstable soil conditions which were addressed by installing 1,500-feet of sheet piles in addition to the planned cylindrical piles.
An Extensive Scope Of Work
Our team was responsible for all clearing, grubbing, trenching, excavation, backfilling and piling as well as the installation of site services. We constructed a gabion wall for soil erosion control, relocated electrical utilities and installed water, sanitary and storm pipes. Additionally, we relocated electrical works, consulting with others responsible for locating new electrical utilities.
