Digging Deep For A Soaring New Addition To The Preston Street Skyline
At the foot of Ottawa’s Little Italy just a stone’s throw from picturesque Dow’s Lake, Claridge Homes’ high-rise Icon condominium is set to become a standout addition to the Preston Street scene. Taggart Construction Limited was one of the first teams onsite as the excavation contractor. Safety and minimizing community disruptions were both priorities. We covered the entire exposed rock face with wire mesh and filter to protect workers and prevent scaling, took steps to reduce noise and vibration for the structural integrity of nearby buildings, and took care to keep traffic flowing along Preston Street and Carling Avenue.
Preserving Community Heritage
Our team took extra precautions to protect the century-old church that stands on the development’s property line, installing a shoring system and using seismographs to monitor vibrations during rock removal. Both the shoring and the church itself were monitored regularly to ensure the protections performed as planned.
In all, we removed +38,000 cubic metres of solid Cambrian bedrock and +3,000 cubic metres of earth. This required controlled drilling, blasting and hoe ramming, detailed footing excavation and backfilling, and the installation of slab drainage, mechanical trenches and new building services.
